November 16, 2001An Evening with Noam Chomsky (MIT, 10/18/01)"We certainly want to reduce the level of terror, certainly not escalate it. There is one easy way to do that and therefore it is never discussed. Namely stop participating in it. That would automatically reduce the level of terror enormously. But that you can’t discuss. Well we ought to make it possible to discuss it. So that’s one easy way to reduce the level of terror."
November 5, 2001She doesn't know it, and probably wouldn't understand it, but Jennifer Tipton had as much to do with my (finding my) life out here in the desert as anyone. She is an awesome woman, and she just won nice award: Rewarded for Putting Stages in the Right Light
November 4, 2001Where the Bombs Are, 1997 NEW MEXICO NUMBER ONE OH YEAH
October 27, 2001My King wood stove (heat) is an antique, I knew that... I didn't know how much of an antique my Chambers gas stove (cooking) was. I love it! Chambers stoves on antiquestoves.com
October 26, 2001What ever happened to Naguib Mahfouz?Nobel laureate says US strikes on Afghanistan "as despicable" as Sept 11 "While the group that carried out the September 11 attack showed utter disregard for any law or standard or decency, now we find a major world power doing the same."
October 14, 2001Hi, yeah, it's me. How you been?Even though it still says "New York City" over there, I'm long gone. I'm just occupied by things other than html right now -- Blogger, I can handle. Anything else, not so much. I'm not in New York. Anyway, I was searching online for a photo of my particular wood stove (this will be my only source of heat this winter, it should be interesting), and all I'm finding that's even close are things on pages of antique wood stoves. It's funny until I think about it too long. In this search I ended up on a page with nothing useful but chock-full of something like irony: Mineral King was an old mining town, and that page's description of life in the old days just isn't that far off from what I'm doing right now. Ghost Towns of Arizona (And I do love me my ghost towns!)
August 12, 2001I'm in the desert now -- the high desert hills of northern New Mexico, to be precise. I don't intend to stay away from this page, really, but I may be repurposing it a tad. Everything is different.
May 27, 2001I wish I had the time to indulge a little research binge regarding the "Desert Mothers", but marking it here for later pursuit will have to do for now.I found that page after coveting Godfrey's "Recluse" nametag and thinking that recluses and hermits are usually assumed to all be male. And well, I disagree.
May 22, 2001A quick update: the dateline of this 'blog -- nay, all of Illuminatrix! -- is going to change soon: New York City no more, as Illuminatrix moves to digs in northern New Mexico. It's going to be enough of adventure, this culture shock, that it will probably warrant a page of its own. I'm as likely as not to have an outhouse at the new place. Updates will be on the top page.
March 27, 2001There's really no other word for it, this has to be a hiatus. I hope it won't be for long -- I hope I miss it soon, and hard, and feel the enthusiasm to go find everything that ever caught my curiosity even for a moment. Because that's the fun part. But there's a lot going on right now elsewhere, and it's springtime, and I can't pretend I'm gonna focus on this. The top page is likely to have slightly more frequent input from me, including some sort of notice when I start blogging in earnest again.
